About Commonground Pixels
Elroy Africa (b1965) is a nomadic, Global South, African, South African, right-to-the-city urbanist, intellectually curious, amateur street photographer and pixel-activist.
Elroy’s most formative and foundational moments growing up were associated with photos, cameras, slides, video recorders or movies, mainly from his late beloved father, Glen Africa.
In many ways this platform is a culmination of that association with photographs, slides and digital images, whether still or in-motion.
Who is Elroy?
A Black-Coloured South African, born in Soweto, Johannesburg, South Africa.
In his youth, Elroy was an anti-apartheid student & community activist.
He spent many years in the post-apartheid South African public service and is a former Director-General of the national Department of Cooperative Governance.
He has a Bachelors in Social Science (UCT) and a Masters in Town and Regional Planning (UKZN).
Elroy has consulted across Africa on local governance, decentralisation, urban development, and integrated border governance.
Elroy is mainly interested in street and guerilla photography of people and places. Pixel activism, for Elroy, is about capturing the contradictory synthesis of urban life, the commons, unsuspecting awe-inspiring landscapes, generous wildlife, and the mystery that nature chooses to reveal at times.
